Belle Reve turns 10 this year!
Residents Participate in PEER Training
Belle Reve residents participate in PEER (Pennsylvania’s Empowered Expert Residents) training! Belle Reve is the 1st community in Pike County to be part of this national program. PEER shows ways that residents can advocate for themselves. There are 5 training sessions for the residents lead by the Pike County Aging Office Ombudsman. After the training, residents have a “graduation” party complete with certificates, cake and a starfish pin. There is a significance to the starfish: it is based on a poem written by Jack Canfield and Mark V. Hansen. The poem's name is: One At A Time and comes from the book “Chicken Soup for the Souls,” pgs 22-23.
One At A Time
"A friend of ours was walking down a deserted Mexican beach at sunset. As he walked, he began to see another man in the distance. As he grew nearer, he noticed that the local native kept leaning down, picking something up and throwing it out into the water.
As our friend approached even closer, he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and, one at a time, he was throwing them back into the water.
Our friend was puzzled. He approached the man and said “Good evening. I was wondering what you are doing”
“I’m throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, it’s low tide right now and all these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If I don’t throw them back into the sea, they’ll die up here from lack of oxygen.”
“I understand” my friend said, “but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can’t possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many. And don’t you realize this is probably happening on beaches all up and down this coast? Can’t you see that you can’t possibly make a difference?” The local native smiled, bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, “Made a difference to that one.”
Belle Reve to Sponsor Relay For Life, Delaware Valley
On June 4-5, 2011 Belle Reve will sponsor and participate in Relay For Life of Delaware Valley. This activity supports American Cancer Society with the most moving part of the entire event being the Luminaria Ceremony of Hope. As the sun sets and darkness falls, the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags, each of which has a special meaning. Some celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer and have lived to tell their stories. Many remember the lives of those who have lost to this disease.
